The 1914 D Lincoln Cent is one of four key date lincoln cents. 1,193,000 1914 D cents were produced by the Denver Mint in 1914. This is the third lowest number of lincoln cents produced for a lincoln cent. This low mintage number and the low number of 1914 D lincoln cents that were saved causes this coin to be a key date for the lincoln coin series.

1914 D Lincoln Cent

Because lincoln cent prices are fairly low, most lincoln cent collectors collect these 1914 D lincoln cents in grades from Very Fine to Mint State. In VF-20, Lincent cent prices for the 1914 D are around $550. Once you get into the Mint State grades the lincoln cent prices for the 1914 D Lincoln Cent are much higher at around $4000 for a MS-63 1914-D Lincoln Cent.

While not as scarce as the 1909 S VDB Lincoln Cent, the 1909 S lincoln cent is also one of the key date lincoln cents. The 1909 S Lincoln Cent was produced in the second half of 1909 after the United States Mint decided to remove Victor David Brenner’s initials from the reverse of the lincoln cent.

1909 S Lincoln Cent

The United States San Francisco Mint produced 1,825,000 1909 S lincoln cents. This makes the 1909 S cent the fourth lowest minted lincoln cent in the series. The 1909 S VDB, 1931 S and 1914 D lincoln cents all had lower mintage numbers.

While it is not as scarce as the 1909 S VDB lincoln cent, it still carries a hefty price. The 1909 S Lincoln Cent prices start at around $100 for a G-4 1909 S lincoln cent, $225 for a EF-40 1909 S Cent and $375 for a MS-63 1909 S Lincoln Cent. While these 1909 Linoln cents were only produced in 4 times the quantity of the 1909 S VDB Lincoln Cents, they cost much less than 25% of the price of the 1909 S VDB. These prices are estimates and are subject to change.

I would highly recommend that you purchase a Mint State 1909 S Lincoln Cent for your lincoln cent collection. You can buy a great quality Mint State 1909 S Lincoln cent for under $500. However, if your budget prevents you from buying a Mint State lincoln cent, don’t worry, buy the best grade you can afford.

The 1909 S VDB Lincoln Cent is the key date lincoln cent. Except for various Lincoln cent error coins, the 1909 S VDB Lincoln Cent has the lowest mintage of all the lincoln cents. In fact, only 484,000 1909 S VDB cents were minted.

1909 S VDB Lincoln Cent

1909 was the first year that the United States Mint made the Lincoln Cent. As the coin initially went into production, the designed of the lincoln cent, Victor David Brenner included his initials on the 1909 Lincoln cent. This is why this key date lincoln cent is called the VDB lincoln cent. You can see the VDB initials on the bottom of the reverse of the 1909 lincoln cent right below the ends of the wheat shafts.

However, not all were happy with Victor David Brenner including his initials on the 1909 lincoln cent and later in that year, his initials were removed from the Lincoln cent. The 1909 S Lincoln Cent without the VDB initials were produced in nearly three times the quantity as the 1909 VDB Lincoln Cent. Specifically, there were 1,825,000 1909 S Lincoln Cents without the VDB initials. This is why the 1909 S VDB lincoln cent is so rare.

The 1909 S VDB Lincoln Cent prices are the highest of all the Lincoln cents. Any person who wants to collect the Lincoln series needs to buy a 1909 S VDB cent to complete the series. Because this is the hardest to obtain, or put another way, the most expensive lincoln cent, this is the key date lincoln cent.

In its lowest grade, G-4, the 1909 S VDB lincoln cent price is around $700. For a Mint State 1909 S VDB Lincoln Cent the price is estimated at around $2300. Except for variety lincoln cents, otherwise known as error lincoln cents, this is the most expense lincoln cent in the Lincoln cent series.
